I have spent past six months with my family in the Lake District, a mountainous region in North West England and designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Surrounded by lakes, mountains, hills, countryside and quaint villages it is a far cry from the hustle and bustle of the city of London.

Naturally, I have been taking advantage of the beauty of nature and the great outdoors. Running, hiking, walking, kayaking, paddle boarding and yoga are some of the activities filling my time.

In recent weeks we have had some nice amount of snowfall and we have had some fun snow hikes and I got to try some Snowga.

Snowga is literally yoga in the snow. It was invented up in the ski slopes to help skiers warm up before their ski sessions. Snowga is the practice of combining breathing techniques and yoga poses in a winter wonderland background. Snowga allows you to create heat from within to keep yourself warm during your practice and here are some of the reasons you should try it!

1. Snowga is a great way to simply get your body moving gently outside during the winter months. You also receive an extra dose of vitamin D, which is necessary for bone, skin and mental health.

2. Snowga keeps winter fun! It is an additional activity to hiking, sledging, snowman building, making snow angels and snowball fights.

3. It enhances self-awareness, improves well-being, prevents injury, increases energy and self-confidence, as well as balance and alignment.

4. When we practice yoga outside, in the beautiful snow, with the fresh air on our faces, we are more mindful of our surroundings. It has a calming effect and creates a focus on our being.

5. The fresh, cold air and wind are invigorating and good for the immune system.

6. Snowga presents all types of new challenges. Winter comes with ice and uneven surfaces. I find I need to engage muscles I can typically ignore. I become aware of different sensations in my muscles and different ways to keep my balance.

7. Snowga is always a great photo opportunity!

Next time it snows go give snowga a try and let me know how you get on.
